In a meeting to discuss the current lengthy road closures in the Monterey Ranger District (MRD),
and in particular the recent closure of Tassajara Road,
Monterey District Ranger 'Fin' Eifert provided this additional information for concerned national forest users:
-
The MRD is working hard to provide a road network that is stable and
able to withstand future climatic events better.
-
This work takes time to achieve and there are many regulatory, policy,
and legal requirements we must undertake before, and during work.
-
The MRD is working to grow its staff in key areas to have a presence
with a purpose and focus on the ground to educate and inform of the
"why".
-
Tassajara Road has a significant trouble spot approximately ½
mile north of China Camp. The MRD, LPNF, and staff are working to
develop both short and longer term plans to repair this section of
road and get the road reopened as soon as safe to do so.
-
The latest closure order,
Forest Order 05-07-00-23-15,
issued October 31, 2023 and effective until
January 31, 2024, has restricted Tassajara Road (FS 18S02) to
non-motorized use. This means that no motorized vehicles are allowed
on the road, except for those exemptions given in the Forest Order.
Ranger Eifert is open and willing to engage members of the public with these issues in the future.
