GoDaddy Fiasco


About the recent unavailability of "www.ventanahiking.net" 

That URL was the original URL for this site but over a year ago I changed to the current URL "bigsurtrailmap.net" (because the map covers much outside the Ventana Wilderness and because my purpose is to provide an accurate map of the trails, not address all hiking concerns).  I had been forwarding traffic from the old to new URL, so many people had not noticed this change.  However, on April 2 I asked my domain registrar GoDaddy to also forward "ventanahiking.net" (sans www.) - and their resulting change hosed the forwarding of "www.ventanahiking.net" so that URL no longer worked.  After six fruitless phone calls, they were still unable to correct that forwarding (unfortunately any changes take up to 24 hours to propagate through the web, hence I did not immediately realize that each of their "corrections" had not actually solved the problem). 

So on April 11 I finally gave up and am now pointing that domain directly to my server instead of goDaddy's server (this is only a temporary solution, until I can move my domains to a competent registrar who can correctly setup the forwarding).  "www.ventanahiking.net" now works and I intend to keep it working, because I know there are bookmarks and links in existing webpages that use it.  But I urge you to switch to "bigsurtrailmap.net" for any new uses since that is the "real" name and hence more reliable (and that has been working throughout this fiasco).  (PS:  "www.bigsurtrailmap.net" will also work, but is not as brief.)
